Beaches of South Sardinia

Updated: Oct 27, 2021

After a long and painful divorce from my ex-wife I was lucky enough to start a new relationship with a wonderful Sardinian woman; Sardinia has consequently become my second home and I have begun to explore its places, history and customs. It goes without saying that the exploration of Sardinia began from the sea; Sardinia is known in the world above all for its beaches and coves with crystal clear water, which have little to envy to paradises such as the Maldives or Polynesia. We have dedicated the summer of 2021 to exploring the coasts of southern Sardinia (which is the area of origin of my partner) from west to east.

In this post I will briefly focus on providing brief tourist information on some (not all) of the most beautiful beaches in Southern Sardinia that can be reached on foot.

The quality of water in Sardinia is practically to be taken for granted; even in the less famous places you can find crystalline water worthy of the Caribbean, so in the following I will limit myself to pointing out the places where the beauty of the water stands out from the (very high) standard of Sardinia.

Under "wind direction" I indicate whether the beach is suitable for this direction; for example "north west" indicates that the best sea conditions are found when the wind comes from the north west.

Beach of Cala domestica (Buggerru)

Depth: tons of space (introvert approved!)

Restricted access: no

Parking: 5 euros (summer 2021); 100 meters from the beach

Mobile phone signal: 0/5

Bars on site: 3

Sand/rocks: dark yellow sand

Wind direction: extremely protected; every wind is fine excepted north west

My rating: 8/10

The beach of Cala Domestica is located at the end of a deep gorge which makes it a beach extremely protected from the winds and ideal for snorkeling, as hundreds of meters of cliffs are available on both sides to explore. The right side, looking towards the sea, is more interesting for the variety of the seabed and the presence of marine life. On the day of my visit there were some Mediterranean jellyfish (Cotylorhiza tuberculata) and numerous ctenophores (both harmless!). Also on the right side there is a small short tunnel that pierces the side of the hill. The beach is very wide, helping to have enough living space even on the busiest days.

Beach of Tuerredda (Teulada)

Depth: 20 meters deep, 400 meters wide

Restricted access: 720 people (https://tuerredda.spacli.it/) (introvert approved!)

Parking: 8 euros (summer 2021); 250 meters from the beach

Mobile phone signal: 3/5

Bars on site: 2

Sand/rocks: white extra fine sand

Wind direction: quite protected; avoid wind from south west

My rating: 9/10

Tuerredda is one of the most famous beaches in Southern Sardinia. It is ideal for snorkeling; in particular in the right reef it is possible to see numerous scorpion fish, snappers, starfish, and even some grouper of decent size. The islet in front of the beach is easily accessible by swimming (it is advisable to use a signal buoy because motorboats often cross the forbidden stretch of sea between the beach and the islet). The sand is white and very fine.

Being a restricted access beach, it is necessary to be there no later than 8 in the morning, preferably at 7.30, to be sure to grab one of the few places available; if you get there after 8.30 don't even try.

Beach of Simius (Villasimius)

Depth: 20 meters deep, 2 km wide

Restricted access: no

Parking: free; 500 meters from the beach

Mobile phone signal: 5/5

Bars on site: many

Sand/rocks: white extra fine sand

Wind direction: north west

My rating: 9/10

It is one of the most beautiful beaches in Villasimius; it has the only defect of being extremely touristy; the water is extraordinarily clear, the sand is very fine; taking position at the north end of the beach, near the rocks just before the beach of Is Traias, you have a few hundred meters to explore for snorkeling and spotting large sea basses and snappers, as well as the usual saddled breams and salema porgies. As in most of the unrestricted beaches of Sardinia, it is necessary to take place early in the morning, possibly no later than 9.30.

Beach of Punta Molentis (Villasimius)

Depth: 5 to 20 meters deep, 300 meters wide

Restricted access: 500 people

Parking: 10 euros per car, 1 euro per person, 100 meters from the beach

Mobile phone signal: 2/5

Bars on site: 2

Sand/rocks: both sand and rocks

Wind direction: north east

My rating: 10/10

One of the pearls of Sardinia. The water is extraordinarily clear; the panorama is magnificent and very particular; on the left cliff there is a rock pinnacle where many venture for a memorable selfie; the reef on the right side is a snorkeling paradise; it is here that I once saw a beautiful flying gurnard swim lazily, spreading its large blue-fringed fins like wings and then moving to literally walk on the sandy bottom in search of food; among the rocks it is also common to see small groupers, scorpion fish and octopuses.

Beach of Porto Giunco (Villasimius)

Depth: 20 meters deep, 600 meters wide

Restricted access: No

Parking: 5 euros per car, 300 meters from the beach

Mobile phone signal: 2/5

Bars on site: 3

Sand/rocks: white sand

Wind direction: west, north west

My rating: 8/10

Very touristy and crowded beach; the quality of the water is as high as ever in Sardinia; from the parking lot a walkway leads to the beach through a salty water pond originated by the storms in the wintertime, where numerous pink flamingos live; an ancient and characteristic Spanish watchtower rises above the hill and helps to give personality to the skyline. The reef on the right side lends itself to snorkeling, but there isn't much marine life. The raised bar closest to the Spanish tower serves a great mojito with nachos.

Beach of Cala Caterina (Villasimius)

Depth: 10 meters deep, 200 meters wide

Restricted access: No

Parking: free, 500 meters from the beach

Mobile phone signal: 3/5

Bars on site: No

Sand/rocks: sand

Wind direction: North east

My rating: 7/10

Small and little-known beach; excellent for snorkeling, here I saw the biggest sea bass of my life. Despite being little frequented, being very small, it is advisable to reach it early in the morning to gain some space.
