In the dynamic world of travel and art, discovering hidden artworks in every corner of the city is a challenging task for every enthusiast. Imagine being a fan of Pontormo, about to visit a city rich in history and culture: Pontormo is a niche artist, and no traditional travel guide will inform you that, right in that destination, a precious work by your favorite artist is on display; or, if you’re a Michelangelo admirer planning to visit Rome and you type “Michelangelo Rome” into Google, you’ll be overwhelmed by hundreds of pages mentioning the Sistine Chapel, and in a city overflowing with artworks, you might miss the presence of the Cristo della Minerva just a few steps from the Pantheon.

For this reason, I have created an innovative search engine for paintings and artworks (which you can find at the bottom of this page, or in the Maps section of this site)—an indispensable tool for anyone who wishes to combine a passion for art with the thrills of travel.

This small but efficient tool allows you to explore an extensive database of artworks by hundreds of the most important artists of all time. Thanks to an intuitive interface and an advanced interactive map, you can filter searches by destination city, by artist, and even by the country in which the work is exhibited. Each result includes the exact geographic coordinates, the title of the work, and a detailed description of the exhibition venue (e.g., “Metropolitan Museum” or “Duomo di Siena”), providing you with complete and up-to-date information at the click of a button.

How the Art Search Engine Works: an interactive map

The platform has been designed with the needs of cultural travelers and art enthusiasts in mind. By entering the destination you have in mind, the system immediately displays all the artworks exhibited in that city. If your interest is focused on a specific artist—for example, if you love the works of Vincent Van Gogh or Pablo Picasso—you simply select the artist’s name to view an accurate and up-to-date list of all their works around the world; or perhaps you want to know where all of Botticelli’s works are in Florence? Just two clicks are enough. Moreover, the country filter allows you to plan itineraries even on an international level, thereby expanding your discovery possibilities; for instance, you can search for all of Piero della Francesca’s works in Italy and plan a route to see the major works of the Renaissance genius throughout the country, or discover that there is one Caravaggio in Malta and another in Syracuse—information that you might easily have missed by doing a simple search on Caravaggio’s name; or, you might even find out that (barring any errors or omissions) there are no works by Modigliani in the United Kingdom.

This innovative tool solves one of the main problems for art enthusiasts: the dispersion of information. Until now, anyone wishing to know which artworks are exhibited in a particular city was forced to consult travel guides, fragmented websites, and art blogs, risking the possibility of missing some works and spending an inordinate amount of time. Now, thanks to Art Finder, every useful piece of data is gathered on a single platform, facilitating the planning of your cultural journey and saving you precious time.

The database meticulously catalogs the field of painting, with the ambition of including all the paintings scattered across the world by the most important painters; marginally, it also includes drawings and prints, whose mapping is somewhat more challenging because, especially in the case of prints—as reproducible works—they are much more widespread; furthermore, many prints and drawings are kept in museum archives but not exhibited to the public, making their cataloging less useful from a tourist perspective. Finally, the database also includes some sculptures, whose mapping is even more problematic, as they represent a form of art that is less popular compared to painting.

A New Way to Experience Art While Traveling

For those who love planning cultural trips, the ability to customize your search based on destination and artist represents an invaluable added value. Imagine organizing an itinerary in art cities such as Florence, Rome, or Paris, and being able to view on an interactive map all the locations where works by famous artists are exhibited. This feature will allow you to create thematic routes, avoid endless searching, and ensure an enriching and well-organized travel experience.
